Solid Start as Steph lights up Dubai

After a seven week break, St Michael’s Stephanie Kyriacou has re-ignited her charge towards LET rookie honours and the Race to Costa Del Sol in the Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic overnight.

The current Geoff King Motors Australian Ladies Classic Champion opened the tournament with a tidy one-under-par 71 to be the leading Australian. She is in 12th place, alongside Germany’s Karolin Lampert.

Western Australia’s Minjee Lee is the next best Aussie at even par and in 14th place, while fellow West Aussie Whitney Hillier is at five over and in a tie for 44th.

Former two-time NSW Women’s NSW Open Champion, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwell, leads after a bogey-free seven-under-par 65; a round which included a hole-in-one on the 146metre 17th.

Playing in the evening half of the draw, Kyriacou, who began her round from the 15th, reeled off 12 straight pars before making a welcome birdie on the 9th.

A dropped shot on the par-five 10th was soon erased with a birdie on the 252 metre par four 13th. With a par on the 14th (her final hole) Kyriacou ended the day in red figures.

Kyriacou will now face the course in daylight, with the morning field due to hit off in a shotgun-style format at 10.00am Dubai time.
